METHODS OF QUITTING: FACTS AND COSTS

Nicotine Patches and Nicotine Gums have a 30+/-% chance of being successful in aiding the smoker to quitting. They PUT nicotine INTO your system, so you still, eventually have to withdraw from nicotine. You Must Not smoke while you are using the patch. It can cause severe health problems, including stroke.

Nicoderm CQ Patch:

The average cost for an individual who smokes a pack or more a day. It is recommended that Step 1, (21mg of nicotine), is followed for 6 weeks, Step 2, (14mg nicotine), for 2 weeks and Step 3, (7mg of nicotine) for 2 weeks. If used as recommended, the cost is $185.78 at a discount store. You feel withdrawal every time you lower the amount of nicotine including after the last 7 mg patch. Again an approximate 30% success rate.

Nicotrol Patch:

This patch boasts a 15mg. patch that you should use for 6 weeks. For smokers who smoke a pack or more a day, this isn't enough to stop the cravings and discomfort. Another important thing to consider is that you eventually have to go from 15 mg. to nothing. Talk about withdrawal! The cost of this method at a discount store is $131.52 Same success rate.

Nicorette Gum:

To me, this is the method that causes the most discomfort. Besides being the most expensive, it causes nausea and other stomach discomforts. It also has been most often used as a REPLACEMENT to smoking, at an astronomical cost! You're still hooked, but to the gum not the cigarettes. The average cost in relation to the recommended usage is $264.20. This cost can be exceeded all TOO easily.

Zyban:

The information here is from the company's own literature. No success rate can be advertised. It is too new.
This is the new Prescription Drug that has been being heavily advertised. First of all this is a DRUG that hasn't been tested in a long term basis on humans. If you are prone to seizures, you can't take it. . If you have been diagnosed with anorexia or bulimia, you should not take this drug. If you are taking Wellbutrin or any MAO inhibitor, you may not take this drug.

OK, for those of us that don't fall under these categories: Here are some of the side-effects of taking Zyban:
Dry Mouth, Difficulty Sleeping, Shakiness, Skin Rash, Caution must be used when driving a car or other machinery.
Users of Zyban have also reported extreme nausea, dizziness, depression, a sense of being "out of it", in addition to some of the above company-described side effects. If you are not prone to seizures, you should consider the fact that there is a chance that 1 in every 1000 people who take Zyban will have a seizure. The general cost of Zyban is $251.16, but you have to add the doctor's visit charge. That can vary from $5 to $75. I'm not thrilled about Zyban. It scares me. It's that simple.
